Understanding Political Terminology (Part I)

I’m not sure about you, but I learn best by reading definitions of words that I’ve heard bandied about so I will better understand them the next time Ihear them whether it be on the evening news or during a cocktail conversation where politics are being discussed. For that purpose I’ve compiled a list of some terms that you may have heard but not understood. Stay on the lookout for future lists as we all get politically smart together! American Independent party is a political party whose most famous presidential candidate was Alabama governor George Wallace; mainly known for opposing racial desegregation.Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) applied portions of the 1964 Civil Rights Act to the handicapped, resulting in lawsuits and institutional expenditures to increase access for the disabled and currently stands effective.Bull-Moose party was a short-lived political party that served as a vehicle for Teddy Roosevelt’s 1912 campaign for president.Civil Rights Act of 1964 was an expansive federal law that prevented racial discrimination by any private business receiving federal money or engaging in commerce with an interstate component.Dual federalism is a federal system in which national powers and state powers are sharply differentiated.Gramm-Rudman-Hollings bill was an unsuccessful law, passed in 1985, that was supposed to eliminate the federal government’s large deficits.Jim Crow Laws are Southern statutes passed around the turn of the twentieth century setting up a rigid racial-caste system.National Security Council is a large foreign policy council responsible for advising the president on foreign policy.Political Action Committees (PACs) are interest groups that (more…)
